Homemade German Soup
Cabbage Soup Recipe

This Kohlsuppe recipe makes a delicious German soup. It contains a savory blend of pork and cabbage mixed with potatoes, carrots, turnips, and onions. Definately not your typical cabbage soup recipe. Delicious!

Ingredients:

  • 4 thick slices bacon, diced (I like to cube slab bacon)
  • 2 sliced onions
  • 1 sliced turnip
  • 2 diced carrots
  • 2 cubed potatoes
  • 1 shredded head of green cabbage (I use a bag of coleslaw mix in a pinch)
  • 1 quart chicken stock
  • 2 c Water
  • 6 sprigs parsley
  • 1 bay leaf
  • 1/4 c Parmesan Cheese, Grated

Directions:

  1. Place parsley and the bayleaf inside a teaball.
  2. In a large saucepan, combine teaball, onions, turnip, bacon, carrots, potatoes, coleslaw mix or cabbage, chicken stock and water.
  3. Bring to a boil. Reduce heat and cover. Allow to simmer partially covered for 1-1/2 to 2 hours.
  4. Remove the tea ball and season with salt and pepper to taste.
  5. Ladle into bowls. garnish with grated parmesan cheese and serve. Enjoy your Kohlsuppe!
