Spicy Indian Dahl Soup

A deliciously spicy homemade Indian lentil soup recipe! It's low fat and tastes great! This soup features jalepenos, ginger and garlic sauteed in oil with mustard seeds. This is added to cooked red lentils. This soup is also seasoned with coriander, cumin, and tomatoes. WOW! Homemade spicy Indian Dahl soup goes great served with homemade Indian Naan bread for an extra treat.

Ingredients:

  • 1 cup red lentils
  • 2 tablespoons olive oil
  • 1 teaspoon mustard seed
  • 3 onions, chopped
  • 2 tablespoons ginger root, minced
  • 3 jalapeno peppers, seeded and minced
  • 6 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 tablespoon ground coriander seed
  • 1 tablespoon ground cumin
  • 4 tomatoes, chopped
  • 2 tablespoons chopped fresh cilantro
  • 1 cup water
  • salt to taste

Directions:

  1. In a large saucepan, cook lentils until they are soft. Set aside.
  2. In a skillet heat the oil and add mustard seeds. As the mustard seeds begin to flutter, add onions, ginger, jalapeno peppers, and garlic.
  3. Saute until the onions and garlic are golden brown. Add coriander and cumin. Add chopped tomatoes. Continue to saute the mixture until tomatoes are well cooked.
  4. Stir in water and bring to a boil. Add cooked lentils, cilantro, and salt to taste. Heat through.
  5. Ladle into bowls and serve. Enjoy this spicy homemade Indian lentil soup recipe.
